Man working happily from home.

Man working happily from home around his family.

When you consider working at home, you’re probably thinking mainly of the positives of working from home. And there are a lot of pros, but you need to consider all aspects of working from home before you make the decision.

In fact, you should probably start by considering the possible negatives, which can outweigh the positives for many people:

1. Do you have small children at home? Do you have someone to watch them while you’re working, or do they take naps and sleep at different times than you do? When will you work? Home is a great place to work, but sometimes it does take effort.

2. Are you a self-starter? Can you just sit down at your desk and work because there’s work to do? Or are you more of a procrastinator? How will this affect your ability to work from home, run your business and earn money?

3. Do you have a place where you can work undisturbed and leave your work out? Whether it’s a dedicated office or a desk in a corner, you will need a place to work from home that is just yours.

4. Are you romanticizing working from home? Many people make the mistake of thinking that working from home is somehow easier, and less work, than working for someone else. The fact is, you’ll work harder than ever. The good news is, you’ll love what you’re doing, and you don’t have to wear shoes.

5. Do you thrive alone? Many people really need interaction with people to do their best work. If this is you, working from home can still be a good option, but you’ll need to find ways to get your people needs met through lunching with others, talking on the phone, or attending interest group meetings.

Are you depressed yet?

Well, don’t be, because the positives of working at home are just as plentiful, and most people find that the positives outweigh even the worst of the negatives. It’s just a matter of understanding the whole picture.

On the positive side:

1. You can work when you function best. While you may spend more time working than you did in an office, you can do that work at your best pace, and set your own schedule to increase your productivity and build your business your way.

2. Because you determine when and where you work, you can spend more time with your family when you work from home, and be more available to do things you enjoy outside work, such as social groups or church groups.

3. You’ll work hard from home, but you won’t have the commute or the stress of working in an office, and you’ll enjoy your work.

4. You’ll reach a point where you’re making more money working from home than at your old job, and you’ll have the resources to do things you’ve always dreamed of.

5. Because you’ll be the boss, you’ll have more freedom than you had working for someone else, and the responsibility to go with it, which means that you can create the life you want.

Sounds pretty good, overall, doesn’t it?
