Are you portraying yourself a Business Coach or a Mentor?

Each one has it’s own unique set of pros & cons, but first let me start off with the definition of each.

Business coach working with clients.

Business coach working with clients.

By definition a Business Coach, is (the practice of providing support and occasional advice to an individual or group in order to help them recognize ways in which they can improve the effectiveness of their business. Business coaches work to improve leadership, employee accountability, teamwork, sales, communication, goal setting, strategic planning and more).  Life Coaching

As illustrated in the picture to the left, it shows you how these clients are being coached in business based skills, in a friendly but professional atmosphere that’s conducive to the type of learning they require.

Basketball coach mentoring to young kids.

By definition a Mentor, is (one that refers to a developmental relationship in which a more experienced person helps a less experienced person, referred to as a protégé, apprentice, mentee, or (person) being mentored, develop in a specified capacity.)  Mentoring

The picture on the left shows you a larger person (grownup) that’s teaching the kids fundamental basketball skills and based on their postures it shows they didn’t already have knowledge of them.  Sports for example that utilize a ranking system are perfect examples of a mentoring type of relationship.  Whereby the teacher is showing their students something they’ve never done before.

I’ve noticed a trend that, when I look at most business minded social networker’s, they list themselves as being a coach or some form a one. My question to them is, when you state that you are a coach are you really putting forth the necessary efforts to be classified as one?

I recently had a conversation with a client of mine, who is still fairly new to working from home, while utilizing newer online marketing techniques (WEB 2.0), that recently went out of town for the holidays to visit their family & extended family. Low and behold, several family members harassed them at different times about why are you always on the computer and not paying attention to the family. As a coach, I feel as though it’s my job to help encourage & uplift their spirits during these situations. If I were to refuse to offer them a shoulder at this time I’d be turning them away and possibly ruining our every growing relationship. However I must be careful not to get caught up in any type of  pity party. I simply thanked them for continuing to work so hard and reminded them that once their extended family sees the fruit of their labor, they’ll quickly change their stance.

Eventually we all run into people that don’t line up with your visions. Especially those closet to you. Let’s face it most family members don’t have an entrepreneurial mentality, so they just won’t understand clearly enough no matter how often you try to explain it to them.

On the other hand, I’ve worked with people who proclaimed themselves to be coaches and they turned out to be nothing but mentors. They pushed me to do things I wasn’t comfortable with and it eventually showed. I just couldn’t put my heart into things I wasn’t comfortable with. For example, this one company asked me if I was more interested in building up my retail business first or business downline members first. Eventually that determined which lead generation system I was pushed upon & how many leads I was requested to purchase monthly. They backed up that request by showing me a average growth chart, which showed me that if you put in work required to meet this typical growth pattern, you could obtain a desirable status by a certain time frame.

Now my so called coaches job was to push my through the training system as quickly as possible, even to the point where I would dedicate time slots during my J.O.B. work schedule to do cold calling. I did it because, they mentioned to me this was how they become successful, so me being new I followed.

Lastly, I feel that to be a good coach, if that’s what you want to be, you must first be coachable yourself. You must posses certain skills that make you stand out in the crowd. Such as the ability to be open minded, a good listener, and someone that has a lot of ideas. Remember everyone doesn’t fit into the same mold, therefore if one particular system doesn’t work for your clients you should be able to provide them with alternatives and variations that they chose from so they can prosper.
