Jobloss Depression

Job-loss Depression

As a continuation to my previous post,  (Are you scared of becoming a victim of our economic crisis?),  about the sad state of our economy where by numerous companies are reducing their bottom line by cutting man power.

Sadly, more often than not that reduction in manpower starts with and usually focused on the working class group more than the upper tiers.  Middle management is next then lastly, you might see a handful of upper management folks but is seldom that it reaches that high.

Of the working class group, I’ve noticed that most of them are related in some form or fashion to customer service positions.   Here in the USA, these companies aren’t looking to completely rid themselves of their customer service positions, but to rid themselves of their American Customer Services positions.  The customer service positions are being Outsourced, to other countries where the labor is usually significantly cheaper.

Some companies that were once considered and spoken in terms of being a Blue Chip, are experiencing the pains associated with having to do massive layoffs in order to stat afloat.  Currently in the news, IBM is preparing to cut 5,000 more U.S jobs and Google the number 1 search engine in the USA is about to layoff 200 Sales & Marketing employees.  Bottom line is, if Powerhouse Companies‘ like these 2 are downsizing or outsourcing, how can you feel comfortable knowing your future isn’t secure at all?

Better yet are you going to be the next victim of this Economic Crisis?  This is why I’m encouraging you to finally take control of your own future and begin writing your own destiny.  If your dream has been that of someone whose looking to get started in a business, either forced or by your own accord, I have the answer to one of your biggest hurdles your about to face.  That question is where do I get started?  I’m here to answer that very question, by showing you how to get started in learning how to market your business.  Through step by step tutorials designed for any skill level, from a novice to an online expert or anywhere in between we have something for all of you.

How It Helps Small Businesses

blogging101As a work at home professional these days, it’s extremely important to not only have a website, but also have a strong “web presence” to drive people to your site and expand your business.

There are many Internet marketing strategies available these days, but one of the most effective remains to be blogging. With the simple addition of a blog to your website, you can really increase traffic to your site and therefore widen your clientele.

To get started, you can start a blog related to your business and begin socializing with other bloggers who have the same interest. Through this socialization with other bloggers, not only are you gaining new friends, you are also building a list of people who might be interested in what you are selling. This is one of the best ways to reach your target market and in the process you also get to know what they like, which is very important if you want to be always in touch with market trends.

The more you blog, the more new people you meet and the more people you can drive to your business’ website. With increased traffic through blogging, you are bound to gain a new client or two! At the same time, bloggers can also help spread the word about your business. If they like what they see, they could possibly start a “viral marketing effect” which means great WOM (word of mouth) advertising!

Of course, blogs are not just for social networking purposes as they can also be used as a way to keep in touch with your existing clientele and keeping them up to speed with what’s new with your business and in your industry. When you “nudge” clients every now and then about new products or services, chances are they will come back for seconds, as doing so keeps you “top of mind” in their eyes.

So give blogging a try and get your products and services out there. Start with a simple introduction, photos and links to your website so they would know where to go, leave comments on other blogger’s posts in order to let them know about your blog and lastly, blog wisely (and remember to keep the level or your service up, as negative feedback travels fast in the blogging world!).

Don’t just blog about everything and anything that crosses your mind. Instead, make sure you stay on topic and since you are blogging for business, leave out all the emotional and journal-like entries. In the end, even though blogging seems like a casual practice, you need to make sure you offer your readers information that is of value to them. With that said, happy blogging!

organized-office1As a new work at home professional, you face unlimited opportunities. You are now in the driver’s seat of your success. Setting up your new home business requires a discipline, structure and good decisions for you to succeed. So how do you start? Here are five important tips to getting yourself started and setting yourself up for success as you begin to work from home.

  1. Organize Your Work Environment: First start by setting up a work station in your home that is a place where you can be productive. Set it up in a quiet area of your home where you’ll be away from every day distractions and noise. Your home office should be an organized environment, with the tools that you need to perform your tasks—the phone, your files, the printer, office supplies, within close reach. Hunting for necessities is a waste of time.
  2. Learn how to organize your time. If you’re a work from home parent, this can be especially challenging. The temptation can be to jump up throughout the day to do chores, throw the laundry in, and spend more time cooking, etc. If your children are home during the day, you need to take care of their needs, and things will pop up throughout the day that will distract you. Use a daily calendar and learn how to plan your day. Write down the top 6-10 most important business tasks you must accomplish each day. Incorporate your home responsibilities that you must accomplish into your calendar. Stick to your schedule as best as possible, and check off what gets accomplished. If you find you are spending too much time on tasks that won’t yield you return in your business, change your habits. A detailed daily calendar will help you control your day so it doesn’t slip away from you.
  3. Set expectations with your family and friends. Since you’re home during the day, people can feel they can call you to “chat.” The kids want you to play, the spouse wants you to run errands throughout the day, etc. Make sure you set clear boundaries for your time. You own a business, you’re not doing a hobby, and that must be respected, just as they would respect it if you were in a corporate office and couldn’t talk on the phone all day, leave to run errands or take the kids to a movie.
  4. Stay connected – once you are an owner of a home business, you may start feeling isolated. When you’re in a company, you have interaction with your peers and management. It’s important that you maintain contact with peers in your industry, get out and about and meet face to face with clients, join networking groups, continue your education by going to seminars, and stay up-to-date on the latest advances in your industry.
  5. You are the CEO, and the decisions are yours to make. You also face unique challenges that you may not be used to, especially if you spent years in an office environment, working for someone else. Remember that successful work at home professionals treat their home business as a business, not a hobby.

balancing-business & FamilyWith some planning and a little juggling, you can run your home business and your household in harmony. Even if your home is usually empty when you are working, there will always be times when you need to work while the family is around. It’s likely your children are home all summer, and there will be weekends, holidays and evenings when you will have to work, so set some grounds rules.

Be sure it is understood that when you are in your office, you are unavailable. Give the family something to do to occupy them while you are working. Treat your office space as though it is in a building down the street. Don’t go there unless you know you can expect quality time, the noise level will be appropriate, and you will not be distracted by other responsibilities. If you keep your office space uncluttered and looking like a professional works there, your family will be less likely to intrude upon your space.

Alternatively, when you are doing something that would not suffer if you were distracted, such as checking email on your laptop, or proofreading your work, take advantage of the opportunity to join the family in the living room, den, or at the park while you are doing it, and don’t complain if you are interrupted.

If you do have children at home during your work week, consider childcare for at least two or three days a week, or half a day each day. You will need quiet times to concentrate or speak with clients, and using childcare does not mean you have to lose the benefit of having more time to spend with your children. It may actually allow you to afford them the quality time they need, and it will give your children a sense that your work is just as important as if you were going to work at a different location.

A lot of work from home professionals have to spend at least 40 hours a week at “work”, especially during the first year of business. Don’t let that stop you from enjoying days and evenings off when you need them. Schedule specific activities, like going to the museum or a sporting event, and don’t spend all your free time catching up on chores. Be sure to arrange time for exercise, or exercise with your family, combining your need for activity with quality family time. If they need you for something you can’t ignore, plan to work after they’ve gone to bed or before they wake up in the morning. Though you may be tired, your time is likely to be more productive than if you try to work while someone you love needs your attention.

If you balance your work time and your family life, you will enjoy working at home, for all the reasons you decided to try it in the first place!

working_from_homeOne of the biggest attractions of working for home, for most people, is “setting your own schedule.” But most people start out working from home by getting to their desks at 8 a.m. and staying there until 5 p.m. Other people work when the spirit moves them, which may not be often enough to get the work done.

The following tips will help you find the best times and places to work from home:

1. Watch your energy for a few days. Many people are very energetic first thing in the morning, but fade about 10 a.m. Others do well between 10 and 2, but have a bad blood sugar crash at 3. Some work better toward the end of the afternoon, some after dinner. Keep a log for at least a week of what your body feels like at various times. Since you work at home, you can work when you work best.

2. Block out times for work of various types. If you get up bright and early, and you’re bright and cheerful, schedule work that needs that kind of energy. One of the benefits of working from home is scheduling around your energy flow. During times that you’re not feeling as perky, schedule paperwork and less creative tasks. If you wake up groggy, take a few minutes to go for a walk or do some stretching exercises to get the blood flowing before you sit down at your desk to do minor, routine tasks to start the day.

3. Working from home doesn’t always mean working AT home. If you like to get outside and work, or work at the library, allow yourself to do that. Sometimes you may feel much more productive working in your home office, while other times, you may need to get out in order to stay productive. This can be simply because it’s nice outside and you’d feel better working outside. It can also be because you need to do a lot of research that can best be done at the library. Work where you work best.

4. Don’t tie yourself to 5 8-hour days. You may work many more hours some days, and take some days off. Working at home is about freedom, and it’s also about getting the work done. Unlike some jobs you’ve had, you won’t be judged on how many hours you spent at the office. You’ll be judged, or judge yourself, based on your results. Focus on doing the best work you can, and when you’re done, you’re done. Doing the work well gives you the freedom to do anything else you want.

Working from home is a wonderful experience, and one of the most important benefits of working from home is working when and where you want, so that you do your best work at the best times for you.

Have you ever been in a situation where a Business or company you were working with just flat out wouldn’t modify their service and/or their product being offered one bit?

For example, I’m a picky eater and I don’t eat certain kinds of foods.  Now if I went into a restaurant and liked a particular dish, but I didn’t want the included bacon added to it; should the restaurant accommodate me or tell me that’s the only way it comes?  If you can relate to this question, please continue to follow along.

FlexibleNow that I have your attention let me share with you a bad business model I witnessed recently.  My friend and I, happened to go out to lunch the other day and we overheard a disturbing situation unfolding right in front of us.  We were in a cafeteria style restaurant, not a buffet, and the gentleman in front of us asked the proprietor if they could split up a meat dish in half with 2 different meats.  The first server flat out said, “No” we can’t do that.  Before the gentlemen could finish telling them that it’s been done before for me, another server came forth and added their personal opinion to the situation.

Here’s where I had a problem and quietly observed the situation as it unfolded a mere 5 feet in front of me.  I was always told that when your in a customer service position, “The customer is always right.“  To me that translates to no matter what a customer wants we should provide it to them unconditionally and without passing judgment onto them.

As business and future potential business owners, especially if you provide some kind of customer service it’s imperative that you first learn how to properly treat your clients.  Remember your clients are you lifeline and cash flow and you approach a scenario like this with a Oh Well I got their money, so I’m done with them type of attitude you will never keep them in your pipeline, thus you won’t have any repeat customers.   Repeat customers is what every customer service oriented business wants more then anything, sure they appreciate that first sale but ultimately they want repeat business.

As our economy continues to dwindle, we must be ever conscious now more then ever of the possibility of our job’s & services being outsourced to other countries where the labor force’s price is a mere fraction of ours.  This is highly apparent in service based industries and R&D facilities.   Now you ask the numerous people out there that are jobless, right now as of 02/19/09, if there previous employers were flexible or fixed in the way they looked at their labor force.  Take note in how they operate and learn to start becoming more flexible in how you do business or soon find yourself out of business.  Don’t allow yourself to fall victim of this ever growing concern, ask us how we can help.

If you would like to learn more about becoming Magnetic or how to become an Attraction Marketing magnet, we here at StarksEServices would like to help you.  It doesn’t matter if your goal is to become a coach to teach others or to just become a student; we all start out in the same position and that’s first as a student.  We must first become teachable ourselves before we can ever teach others.

Happily working with friendsWhen you think about working from home and running your own business, you obviously imagine working on your own schedule, having more freedom and making more money, at least down the road, than you make in your current job. Have you thought about the people you’ll work with?

Most people who run their own businesses and work from home enjoy being “the boss,” and many have left jobs where their immediate superiors were difficult or impossible to please. This is a major cause of job dissatisfaction, and a major motivator for people to run their own business and work from home.

Being your own boss is certainly an advantage of working from home for yourself, but the benefits of working solo go even further, when it comes to the people you work with in your business.

Even when you own your business and work from home, you will work with other people—suppliers, clients, and perhaps contractors or employees. And, of course, you’ll interact with people you know, in addition to those you work with.

One of the great things about working from home and running your own home business is that you get to choose who you work with, and how you work with them. You decide what personality traits click with you, and you seek out those people to work with.

If you’re working with a client and you just feel you’re not the best fit, you can find another client, and allow the first client to choose a business that better fits their needs. If you’re very happy with a client, you’re free to make arrangements to give them more of what they need, so you can continue working together.

One of the greatest things about running your own business is that when you find another business owner you really click with, whom you really want to work with more, you can form an alliance or partnership to work together on other projects. This is one of the most powerful elements of your own business, this ability to work with people you click with.

Who you spend time with determines who you become, and as a home business owner, you have the final say on who you hang out with and work with. You are absolutely free to work with people you click with and who make you feel more productive and happier. It’s a great place to be, your own business.

Happily working with friends

Man working happily from home.

Man working happily from home around his family.

When you consider working at home, you’re probably thinking mainly of the positives of working from home. And there are a lot of pros, but you need to consider all aspects of working from home before you make the decision.

In fact, you should probably start by considering the possible negatives, which can outweigh the positives for many people:

1. Do you have small children at home? Do you have someone to watch them while you’re working, or do they take naps and sleep at different times than you do? When will you work? Home is a great place to work, but sometimes it does take effort.

2. Are you a self-starter? Can you just sit down at your desk and work because there’s work to do? Or are you more of a procrastinator? How will this affect your ability to work from home, run your business and earn money?

3. Do you have a place where you can work undisturbed and leave your work out? Whether it’s a dedicated office or a desk in a corner, you will need a place to work from home that is just yours.

4. Are you romanticizing working from home? Many people make the mistake of thinking that working from home is somehow easier, and less work, than working for someone else. The fact is, you’ll work harder than ever. The good news is, you’ll love what you’re doing, and you don’t have to wear shoes.

5. Do you thrive alone? Many people really need interaction with people to do their best work. If this is you, working from home can still be a good option, but you’ll need to find ways to get your people needs met through lunching with others, talking on the phone, or attending interest group meetings.

Are you depressed yet?

Well, don’t be, because the positives of working at home are just as plentiful, and most people find that the positives outweigh even the worst of the negatives. It’s just a matter of understanding the whole picture.

On the positive side:

1. You can work when you function best. While you may spend more time working than you did in an office, you can do that work at your best pace, and set your own schedule to increase your productivity and build your business your way.

2. Because you determine when and where you work, you can spend more time with your family when you work from home, and be more available to do things you enjoy outside work, such as social groups or church groups.

3. You’ll work hard from home, but you won’t have the commute or the stress of working in an office, and you’ll enjoy your work.

4. You’ll reach a point where you’re making more money working from home than at your old job, and you’ll have the resources to do things you’ve always dreamed of.

5. Because you’ll be the boss, you’ll have more freedom than you had working for someone else, and the responsibility to go with it, which means that you can create the life you want.

Sounds pretty good, overall, doesn’t it?

Are you portraying yourself a Business Coach or a Mentor?

Each one has it’s own unique set of pros & cons, but first let me start off with the definition of each.

Business coach working with clients.

Business coach working with clients.

By definition a Business Coach, is (the practice of providing support and occasional advice to an individual or group in order to help them recognize ways in which they can improve the effectiveness of their business. Business coaches work to improve leadership, employee accountability, teamwork, sales, communication, goal setting, strategic planning and more).  Life Coaching

As illustrated in the picture to the left, it shows you how these clients are being coached in business based skills, in a friendly but professional atmosphere that’s conducive to the type of learning they require.

Basketball coach mentoring to young kids.

Basketball coach mentoring to young kids.

By definition a Mentor, is (one that refers to a developmental relationship in which a more experienced person helps a less experienced person, referred to as a protégé, apprentice, mentee, or (person) being mentored, develop in a specified capacity.)  Mentoring

The picture on the left shows you a larger person (grownup) that’s teaching the kids fundamental basketball skills and based on their postures it shows they didn’t already have knowledge of them.  Sports for example that utilize a ranking system are perfect examples of a mentoring type of relationship.  Whereby the teacher is showing their students something they’ve never done before.

I’ve noticed a trend that, when I look at most business minded social networker’s, they list themselves as being a coach or some form a one. My question to them is, when you state that you are a coach are you really putting forth the necessary efforts to be classified as one?

I recently had a conversation with a client of mine, who is still fairly new to working from home, while utilizing newer online marketing techniques (WEB 2.0), that recently went out of town for the holidays to visit their family & extended family. Low and behold, several family members harassed them at different times about why are you always on the computer and not paying attention to the family. As a coach, I feel as though it’s my job to help encourage & uplift their spirits during these situations. If I were to refuse to offer them a shoulder at this time I’d be turning them away and possibly ruining our every growing relationship. However I must be careful not to get caught up in any type of  pity party. I simply thanked them for continuing to work so hard and reminded them that once their extended family sees the fruit of their labor, they’ll quickly change their stance.

Eventually we all run into people that don’t line up with your visions. Especially those closet to you. Let’s face it most family members don’t have an entrepreneurial mentality, so they just won’t understand clearly enough no matter how often you try to explain it to them.

On the other hand, I’ve worked with people who proclaimed themselves to be coaches and they turned out to be nothing but mentors. They pushed me to do things I wasn’t comfortable with and it eventually showed. I just couldn’t put my heart into things I wasn’t comfortable with. For example, this one company asked me if I was more interested in building up my retail business first or business downline members first. Eventually that determined which lead generation system I was pushed upon & how many leads I was requested to purchase monthly. They backed up that request by showing me a average growth chart, which showed me that if you put in work required to meet this typical growth pattern, you could obtain a desirable status by a certain time frame.

Now my so called coaches job was to push my through the training system as quickly as possible, even to the point where I would dedicate time slots during my J.O.B. work schedule to do cold calling. I did it because, they mentioned to me this was how they become successful, so me being new I followed.

Lastly, I feel that to be a good coach, if that’s what you want to be, you must first be coachable yourself. You must posses certain skills that make you stand out in the crowd. Such as the ability to be open minded, a good listener, and someone that has a lot of ideas. Remember everyone doesn’t fit into the same mold, therefore if one particular system doesn’t work for your clients you should be able to provide them with alternatives and variations that they chose from so they can prosper.

Woman enjoying time with her son.

Woman enjoying time & freedome with her son.

Most people say their goals for working at home are time with their families, and freedom to do things when they want, rather than on someone else’s  schedule. If this is you, you’re absolutely right.

In life, we’re given resources. Time is a resource, money is a resource, freedom is a resource. By working from home, we can use more of our time and freedom resources to do things that we wouldn’t be able to do working a regular week at a regular job.

And once the business gets up and going, we also have the money resource we would not have except for working from home. So after a short time, we have money, time and freedom to truly enjoy and treasure our lives.

What are you going to do with your time, money and freedom?

Here’s a list of suggestions:

1. Play more

2. Spend more time doing nothing

3. Work on things you love

4. Love your family

5. Take care of your health

6. Sleep. A lot.

7. Consider how to get more of all your resources

8. Teach others how to work from home and build their resources

9. Enjoy it

10. Enjoy it some more

Couple enjoying life

Couple enjoying life

If you’ve been following the news at all, you know that our economy is not getting any better; in fact, it’s getting so much worse, so fast, that it’s hard to know what’s going on from one day to the next.

Many people are losing jobs; others are worried they’ll lose theirs. The most common emotion seems to be a feeling of complete lack of control over the future. President-Elect Obama is already taking action to have an economic stimulus plan in place as soon as he takes office, and one of his aides has publicly said that the goal is to “prevent a depression.”

It’s all pretty scary, and if you’ve already been uncertain about your future and your economic situation, this just makes it all look a lot worse, doesn’t it? Fortunately, there is very good news, at least for those people who want to work from home and run their own business.

You can control your future, by starting your own business and working from home. You will work hard; at times you will work harder than you’ve ever worked in your life, and you may not find financial riches immediately. Starting your own business carries its own difficulties and uncertainties. But they’re your difficulties and uncertainties.

When you start your own business venture, you take control of your future. You’re no longer worrying about whether you’ll have a job next week or if the company you work for will go under unexpectedly. Working at home for your own business, you will know exactly what’s happening and why. You’ll run your own business and make all the decisions about how to keep your business not only alive, but thriving.

You will have opportunities to do and learn things you’ve never done, you’ll be creating the life you want, living a life you love, and doing what you want to do. In fact, running your own business, working from home, is all about opportunities—understanding them, taking advantage of them, and creating them, for yourself and your family. One such opportunity that’s now available is Internet Marketing. Now you can combine Social Networking with Networking Marketing and create a strong presence for your business through the use of Internet Marketing tools.

Will working from home an running your own business always be easy?  No.  There will be challenges and obstacles.  You will learn a lot by doing things “wrong,” and you will see a lot of opportunities not quite work out.  There will be difficult times, along with good times, when you work from home in your own business.  But you will always be in control, and you will always be moving toward your ultimate dreams.

Woman wondering about her future

Woman wondering about her future

Too many times a child growing up, I was told to go to school, get good grades, go to college and get a good job. When I state A Good Job, most people were trying to find that ideal job they could stay at for many years, some even for the duration of their working lives.

I personally know several people, who worked at 1 company or it’s subsidiaries from the moment they could begin working until their retirement age. During my early years as a child, I heard that Job Security was a big thing. It wasn’t common for people to jump from one company to another, you were almost expected to work for one company for at least 20+ years.

Once I began my job searching journey in Corporate America, I was asked by family & friends, about Retirement Packages. Does the potential employer have any kind of retirement packages? As a young person, the phrase (Retirement Package) didn’t mean too much to me at the time. I always envisioned myself moving up the Corporate Ladder and becoming such a valuable commodity that the company wouldn’t dare think about not taking care of me once I was done. Boy did I have the wool pulled over my eyes, I eventually realized that I was living in a fantasy world. I watched family & friends get to the point were they were either considered expendable, a candidate for early retirement or your services aren’t needed anymore.

I wondered after these people just put in over 20 years of service, with their companies how they could be just let go like that. It made me start thinking about me and my family. What’s to stop my company from down sizing us or sending our work over seas where labor is cheaper? Sadly I’ve come to the realization that Job security in Corporate America just doesn’t exist anymore.
